When Should My Child Start Swimming Lessons in Dubai?

Coach Mary BernardoJanuary 12, 20266 min read

I get this question in almost every first message I receive from a new parent: "What age should my child actually start swimming lessons?" It's a fair question, and in a city full of pools like Dubai, it's a genuinely important one. So here's my honest answer, not a marketing one.

The short answer: earlier than most parents think

I start Baby & Me classes from around 6 months — as soon as a baby has good head control. That surprises some parents, who assume 'real' lessons only start once a child can walk or talk. But the earliest classes aren't about teaching a stroke. They're about building comfort in the water before a child is old enough to develop a fear of it.

A baby who spends time being gently held, floated, and splashed in water from 6 months old rarely develops the anxious relationship with pools that I see in some of my older beginner students. That's not a coincidence — it's the whole point of starting early.

But age is only half the story

What matters just as much as age is temperament and exposure. I've taught 4-year-olds who took to the water instantly and 8-year-olds who needed several sessions just to feel okay having their face wet. Neither is unusual, and neither is a problem — it just means we start from a different place.

For solo lessons — Private, Semi-Private, or Group classes without a parent in the water — I generally look for a child to be around 3 years old and able to follow simple instructions ('blow bubbles', 'kick your feet'). Some 3-year-olds are ready immediately. Others do better easing in through a few more months of Baby & Me first. I'll always tell you honestly which I think fits your child.

What each stage actually looks like

From 6 months to about 3 years, I keep parents in the water the entire class. We're building trust — through songs, gentle submersions, and floats — not chasing technique. You'll learn as much in these classes as your child does, because you're the one who'll be holding them in every pool for years to come.

From around age 3 onward, once a child is comfortable being in the water without a parent right beside them, we move into proper skill-building: floating, kicking, breath control, and eventually full strokes. I choose Private, Semi-Private, or Group format based on your child's personality — some kids thrive with a bit of peer energy, others do best with my undivided attention.

The one thing I'd tell every parent

Don't wait for your child to "grow out of" a fear of water before starting lessons. In my experience, that fear rarely fades on its own — it tends to fade through small, safe, repeated exposure with someone who won't rush them. That's exactly what I build every class around, whatever age we're starting at.

If you're not sure where your child would fit, message me their age and a quick description of how they are around water. I'll tell you honestly where I think we should start — no pressure, just a straight answer.
