Choosing a Class

5 Signs It's Time to Move from Group to Private Swim Lessons

Parents ask me this a lot: "Should we switch from group lessons to private?" There's no universal answer, but after 17 years of teaching both formats, I've noticed the same handful of signs show up again and again when a switch actually makes sense. Here are the five I look for.

1. Progress has quietly plateaued

Every swimmer improves quickly at first, then naturally slows down — that's normal. But if your child has been stuck on the exact same skill for several weeks in a group class, it's often because the group's pace has moved past their specific sticking point, or the class simply can't dedicate the repeated, individual correction that one particular skill needs.

2. Your child is holding back to match the group

I've taught plenty of kids who are quietly ahead of their group — capable of more, but pacing themselves down to stay comfortable with friends or avoid standing out. That's not a bad thing socially, but it does mean their technical growth has essentially paused. Private or semi-private lessons let a swimmer like this actually push forward.

3. There's a specific fear or block a group class can't address

Group classes move at a shared pace. If your child has one particular block — putting their face fully underwater, jumping in unassisted, swimming without a wall in sight — that fear often needs concentrated, repeated attention that a group format, by its nature, can't always give in the moment. This is where I see private lessons make the fastest difference.

4. You have a real goal with a timeline

Whether it's a school swim test, a competitive squad tryout, or simply wanting your child water-safe before a trip, a fixed goal with a fixed date is one of the clearest signs that focused, one-on-one coaching will get you there faster than a general group curriculum.

5. Scheduling has become the real obstacle

Sometimes it's not about skill at all — it's that a group class's fixed weekly slot doesn't fit your family's life anymore. Private lessons, especially the ones I run at your own building's pool, solve this directly. If missed classes are piling up because of schedule conflicts, that alone is worth a conversation.

If one or two of these sound familiar, it doesn't necessarily mean group classes were the wrong choice — it just might mean it's time for the next step. Message me on WhatsApp and tell me a bit about where your swimmer is at. I'll give you my honest opinion on whether private, semi-private, or staying in group is the right call.
